After obtaining my Bachelor of Science degree in biomedical sciences with a human nutrition minor at the University of Waterloo, I went on to study naturopathic medicine at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine.  It was during my studies to become a naturopathic doctor that my own health started to unravel - overworked, no energy, emotions all over the place, irregular periods, always always cold, and pure lack of zest to get up and go.  I ignored all the signs my body was telling me, and told myself "it'll get better when I'm done school, I'll bounce back".  A history of being a competitive athlete cultivated this sentiment..

Guess what, it didn't get better.

It got worse - hormonal acne, anxiety, low moods, and struggling to get out of bed.  Naturally, I tried various diets and supplements in an attempt to heal my body.  Some things helped, but nothing really lasted.. "how could I be a naturopathic doctor if I couldn't even heal my self?"  It was a low time.

I knew I needed help, so I sought help from various health care professionals.  Rule #1 of being human, if you need help, reach out!  My family doctor did some basic blood work, but nothing showed. I was told, "everything is normal", and when I pressed further I was then told,"it's just the way you are".  This is not my normal -  for years I had high energy and a FULL life, something had changed.  I knew it deep down.  I wasn't satisfied with the answers I was told, so I chose to invest in my health and do further testing - COMPREHENSIVE FEMALE HORMONAL work up.

And guess what, there it was, my thyroid was under attack by my own body.  "Is this real?  Wow, this is really happening to me.  Why is this happening?  What did I do.  What happened?  Ok, now what.. there's your answer Kate, go get it."

It was my own self interest that lead me to where I am today.  I read A LOT on thyroid health - who was at risk, possible causes, treatment options, how hormones communicate through the whole body, and so on.  Listening to my body and using the knowledge I had, I gave my body what it needed and I began to THRIVE.  But it doesn't just stop there with the thyroid.  Women with thyroid conditions will often come to know the term "flare up" - a condition which was previously managed has worsened.  I am well familiar with thyroid flare ups, no doubt brought out by huge hormonal swings of pregnancy and postpartum. All this goes without saying - it wasn't easy, but I learned and figured it out along the way.

This is My WHY.

I understand. I've been there and it's not fun, but I am thankful for my experience as it has allowed me to better support many woman like myself.

So I ask you, are your ready to invest in your health and feel better?
